One small but important detail before we get started: I'm not a YouTube video maker, who made a protein ice cream. I'm a protein ice cream maker, who made a YouTube video. So, sorry, if this video is not of the highest quality, but I promise you, the protein ice cream is!

For those who don't know me yet, I am Jos from True-Natural-BodyBuilding.com. Since I was 14, I have been passionate about everything related to body composition optimization (building muscle mass while reducing excess bodyfat), through training and healthy nutrition, without using any performance enhancing drugs or supplements. Today I'm over 50, and still exercising almost daily. First, I want to introduce you to Greg Doucette. Who is Greg Doucette? Well, Greg is not an average guy. I would describe him as a very active dude, who is in his mid-forties and has accomplished quite a lot for him to be proud of.

Greg has a master's degree in kinesiology and was a competitive powerlifter and professional bodybuilder, who also adores riding the bike. Until the age of 35, Greg was a natural bodybuilder. Then he decided to pursue a professional bodybuilding card and started to abuse all kinds of performance enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids. Currently he is only on testosterone replacement therapy, he doesn't compete anymore, but he coaches other powerlifters and bodybuilders. In recent years, he has developed into a very popular fitness YouTuber, who tells openly the truth about performance enhancing drugs, encourages young athletes to stay natural as long as possible, promotes a realistic and healthy body composition, promotes cardio training for health reasons and bodyfat reduction, makes natty-or-not YouTube videos, criticizes other fitness youtubers who spread nonsense, sells cookbooks with low-calorie recipes that are high in volume, fiber, and protein; and promotes his own fitness supplement line.

I respect Greg a lot because of his achievements, and because we think more or less the same about many health and fitness related topics. Therefore, I recommend you to watch his YouTube videos, to buy his cookbooks, and to try his Anabolic Protein Ice Cream at least once.

For me, chef Greg Doucette is the one and only godfather of protein ice cream. Without Greg, I probably would never have heard about protein ice cream. He really inspired me to try out protein ice cream, and he also convinced me to buy a Ninja blender for this specific purpose. When I first saw Greg's YouTube video, in which he makes his Anabolic Protein Ice Cream, I was immediately convinced by the concept of protein ice cream. Yes, a well-composed protein shake may have the same nutritional values and be equally delicious as a protein ice cream, but the huge difference is that it takes only 1 minute to drink a shake, while it takes up to a whole hour to eat an equal amount of protein ice cream. So yes, drinking a protein shake is fantastic for during the day, when you don't have much time to eat. But in the evening, when you are relaxing, and maybe watching television, it is just fantastic if you can enjoy your delicious treat, for a whole hour instead of 1 minute. So, yes, I was completely sold for the protein ice cream concept and determined to implement it in my own diet.

So that's what I did. I bought myself a Ninja blender and made Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream. I probably made it about 5 times. But unfortunately, I just did not like the taste and texture well enough to continue making it. A too icy and foamy texture, with a rather superficial watery taste. Just not good enough for me. It really was a disappointing experience for me, because I kind of especially bought my Ninja blender because I thought Anabolic Protein Ice Cream would be a great addition to my diet. But I decided not to give up, and I started studying about and experimenting with protein ice cream myself, with one goal in mind: developing a truly delicious, low-calorie, high-protein ice cream that is healthy at the same time. And that's how my True Natural Protein Ice Cream recipes came about.

Now let's compare Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream with my True Natural Protein Ice Cream.

Let's take a closer look at the ingredients that Greg uses. I'm not going to reveal the exact quantities of each ingredient. For that you will have to buy Greg's cookbook. I will list, however, the ingredients from highest quantity to lowest quantity: lots of ice cubes, some frozen berries, almond milk, flavored protein powder, flavoring powder (such as cocoa and peanut butter), xanthan/guar gum, and stevia.

If we list the ingredients of my True Natural Protein Ice Cream in the same way we get: lots of frozen berries (strawberries or zucchinis) and some frozen banana, cottage cheese, flavored whey protein powder, flavoring powder (such as cocoa and peanut butter), xanthan/guar gum, stevia, and optionally a small quantity of dextrose or whipping cream. The truly original signature ingredients that I use in my True Natural Protein Ice Cream recipes, which I have not encountered in any other protein ice cream recipes, are indeed cottage cheese and zucchini. Like cucumber and tomatoes, zucchinis are from a scientific perspective fruit, berries to be precise. But in the kitchen, we call them vegetables, because they look like vegetables, because they taste like vegetables, because they are low in sugar as vegetables, and because we prepare them like vegetables.

So, if we compare my True Natural Protein Ice Cream to Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream, we can summarize that Greg's ice cubes are replaced by frozen berries and banana, the almond milk is replaced by cottage cheese, and a small quantity of dextrose or whipping cream is added. All these things serve one main goal, and that is to replace the icy-foamy texture by a much better, full-creamy texture, which more resamples that of traditional ice cream. And yes, you pay a price for the much-improved texture and taste: my True Natural Protein Ice Cream contains almost 50% more calories than Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream. But it also contains 35% more protein due to the cottage cheese, which contains a high amount of the slowly absorbing casein protein, as well as 4 times more healthy veggies and fruit. And due to its thicker and creamier texture, the True Natural Protein Ice Cream will be much more filling.

Moreover, if you chose the ultra low-calorie version of my True Natural Protein Ice Cream, which does not contain any dextrose or whipping cream, you will get only a 5% higher calorie content than Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream, but 45% more protein, and 4 times more healthy veggies and fruit. And thanks to the cottage cheese and zucchini, the True Natural Protein Ice Cream will still easily beat Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream, in terms of texture and taste. In terms of simplicity, however, Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream is the winner, as it uses less ingredients and is very quickly to prepare, whereas my True Natural Protein Ice Cream is only at its best, after a day in the freezer.

I'm sure, for someone like Greg, who stays year-round at a very low bodyfat percentage, and thus is always very hungry, the Anabolic Protein Ice Cream will taste more than good enough. But for ordinary people like you and me, who don't always need to follow a very low-calorie diet to stay below 10% bodyfat, the extra calories that come with the True Natural Protein Ice Cream are a price we are happy to pay, for the ultimate taste experience. And don't forget that the True Natural Protein Ice Cream has only one third of the calories of ordinary ice cream, 3 times less carbohydrates, 4 times less fat, and 3 times more protein.

So, the clear winner is? Well, there is not really a winner. It all depends on what you are looking for. If you need an extremely low-calorie ice cream with a solid amount of protein, which is easy and quick to make, you go for Greg's Anabolic Protein Ice Cream. However, if you are prepared to consume slightly more calories to get the ultimate taste sensation, and on top of that a solid portion of healthy veggies and fruit, you choose for my True Natural Protein Ice Cream.

Now, why am I so sure that the True Natural Protein Ice Creams taste so delicious?

Well, it took me multiple years of trial-and-error experiments, using different ingredients in different quantities, to fine tune my protein ice cream recipes to optimize the taste and texture. And now I have finally hit bull's eye. Not only do I love my True Natural Protein Ice Creams so much that I eat them myself every single day, at least half a liter (that is 2 full cups), but I also did the ultimate taste test. I offered it to my youngest son, who's only 5 years old. And yes, he totally adores it! And that, for me, is the absolute proof that the True Natural Protein Ice Creams are truly delicious!

Now let's see how my True Natural Protein Ice Cream compares to other overly delicious treats. Let's compare my chocolate flavored True Natural Protein Ice Cream to 3 other chocolate sensations: a chocolate flavored protein-oats shake, an ordinary chocolate flavored ice cream, and pure dark chocolate. I have put the characteristics of these 4 chocolate treats next to each other in the following Table 4, assuming an equal weight of 700 grams for ease of comparison. As you can see, the nutritional values of the protein-oats shake are almost identical to those of the True Natural Protein Ice Cream. However, as mentioned before, it takes only a minute to drink the shake, while it takes up to an hour to eat the same amount of protein ice cream. When comparing the True Natural Protein Ice Cream to the ordinary ice cream, you see that the ordinary ice cream contains almost 3 times more calories, 3 times more sugar and fat, and 3 times less protein. For pure dark chocolate, the comparison is even much more dramatic. Yet, the True Natural Protein Ice cream provides and equal amount of chocolate pleasure (1 hour), and even contains 400 grams of healthy veggies and fruit. It's up to you to decide what's the best choice for yourself.

One last note before concluding this video: Please, don't expect the True Natural Protein Ice Cream to be an identical copy of ordinary ice creams in terms of texture and taste. That is impossible because they are fundamentally different products, made in a different way, and using different ingredients.
